6-Day Western Desert Circuit: Fayoum to Kharga Grand Loop

Fayoum, Bahariya, the White Desert, Farafra, Dakhla and Kharga — six days through the Western Desert oases

This 6-day Western Desert circuit from Cairo adds a full Fayoum day — Tunis Village, Wadi El Hitan's whale fossils, and Magic Lake — onto the 5-day New Valley oasis route, covering five oases from Fayoum to Kharga in one continuous 4x4 journey with Dune Raider Adventure's desert guide throughout.

DAY 1 — Cairo to Fayoum

The trip starts close, which is the point — Fayoum is barely two hours from Cairo. You stop at Tunis Village to see potters at work on wheels their families have used for generations, then Wadi El Rayan, where two man-made lakes feed a small waterfall, Egypt's only one.

From there it's on to Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the fossilized skeletons of Basilosaurus — early whales that still had legs — lie exposed in the sand. The afternoon continues with dune crossing at Qasour El Arab and a stop at Magic Lake, where the color shifts with the light. Dinner and the night are spent camping in Fayoum.

DAY 2 — Fayoum to Bahariya

Leaving Fayoum, the convoy heads for Bahariya Oasis, stopping along the way at English Mountain, a limestone ridge overlooking the desert road. Lunch is at a Bedouin house in Bahariya, cooked by locals.

In the afternoon there's a stop at the Salt Lakes before settling into the lodge for dinner and the second night.

DAY 3 — Black Desert, Crystal Mountain and the White Desert

The day moves through the Black Desert, hills dusted dark with basalt and dolerite, then on to Crystal Mountain, a hill studded with calcite that catches the light. From there it's Agabat Valley for sandboarding, then El Hiez water well, the Santa Tree — a centuries-old acacia standing alone in the White Desert — and Ain Hodra, a natural spring.

Lunch is out in the desert. The afternoon continues into the White Desert itself, chalk-white rock carved into mushroom shapes by wind erosion. Dinner and the night are spent camping under the stars.

DAY 4 — Farafra to Dakhla

Breakfast is in camp, then the convoy departs for Farafra, the smallest and most isolated of Egypt's inhabited oases. A stop at the local ethnographic museum, a small folk-art collection documenting Farafra life, precedes the drive on to Dakhla Oasis.

Lunch is in Dakhla. The afternoon covers Deir el-Hagar, a restored sandstone temple, the Necropolis of Al-Mezawaka with its painted Roman-era tombs, and the old village of Al-Qasr, a warren of mudbrick houses and covered lanes. Dinner and the night are at a desert lodge.

DAY 5 — Kharga — Village, Temple and Necropolis

From Dakhla the road continues to Kharga Oasis, the largest of the New Valley oases. The morning covers the village of Bashindi and a local Islamic heritage site.

Lunch is in Kharga. In the afternoon the group visits the Bagawat Necropolis, a Christian cemetery of mudbrick funerary chapels dating from the fourth to sixth centuries, and the Temple of Hibis, a Twenty-Sixth Dynasty sanctuary. Dinner and the night are at a hotel.

DAY 6 — Kharga Museum and the Road Back to Cairo

Breakfast at the hotel, then a stop at the Kharga Museum of Antiquities, home to finds from the oasis's pharaonic, Roman, and Christian layers.

From there it's the drive back to Cairo, arriving in the evening — six days and the length of the Western Desert behind you.
