English Mountain, Djara Cave, Crystal Mountain, and the Black Desert — three days through the Western Desert
This 3-day Bahariya & Djara Cave tour from Cairo is built around one of the Western Desert's least-visited stops: Djara Cave, a natural limestone cave hung with stalactites and stalagmites just off the desert road. Dune Raider Adventure pairs it with two nights camping in the White Desert, English Mountain's WWI ruins, and Crystal Mountain's calcite formations — a route most Bahariya day-trippers never see.
DAY 1 — Cairo to Bahariya
You leave Cairo in the morning for Bahariya Oasis, stopping along the way at English Mountain, a low ridge that served as a British lookout post during the First World War, with some of the old fortifications still standing on top. Lunch is at a local Bedouin house.
In the afternoon the convoy continues into the Black Desert, hills dusted dark with basalt and dolerite. Dinner and the night are spent at a desert camp in the White Desert.
DAY 2 — Djara Cave and the White Desert
Breakfast is in camp, then the day is spent in the White Desert, with dune crossing at Karawin dunes before continuing to Djara Cave, a natural limestone cave right off the desert road that most visitors to Egypt never see. Climbing down, the temperature drops fast; the ceiling is hung with stalactites and the floor built up with stalagmites. Lunch is out in the desert.
After visiting the cave, the convoy heads back into the White Desert to watch the sunset over the chalk formations. Dinner and the night are spent at camp.
DAY 3 — Santa Tree to Crystal Mountain
Breakfast is in camp, then the day covers the Santa Tree, a lone acacia estimated at three to four hundred years old standing by itself in the White Desert, and Ain Hodra, a natural spring tucked into the chalk formations. The route continues through Agabat Valley and Crystal Mountain, a hill studded with calcite that catches the light, then El Hiez water well.
Lunch is at a Bedouin house. From there it's the drive back to Cairo, arriving in the evening.
