This 2-day Bahariya Oasis desert safari from Cairo is the fastest way to see the Black Desert's basalt hills and the White Desert's chalk formations, with one night camping under the stars near Chicken Rock. DAY 1 — Cairo to the White Desert

You leave Cairo in the morning by 4x4 or bus. The first stop is a Bedouin house, where lunch is cooked by the family who lives there rather than served out of a cooler in the truck. From lunch, the convoy continues to English Mountain, a low ridge that served as a British lookout post during the First World War; old fortifications are still visible along the top of it.

Next comes the Black Desert, a stretch of hills dusted charcoal-dark with basalt, the kind of landscape that looks scorched even though nothing ever burned here. By late afternoon you're into the White Desert proper, timed to pass the Chicken Rock formation and catch the sunset while the chalk-white rock changes color. Dinner is cooked by local Bedouin around the campfire, followed by tea and stargazing before bed in the tent.

DAY 2 — Santa Tree, Sandboarding, and the Road Back to Cairo

Morning starts early, with the sunrise breaking over the White Desert while you're still half in your sleeping bag. Breakfast is served at 7:30, then the convoy heads back toward Bahariya, stopping first at the Santa Tree — a lone acacia old enough that guides argue over whether it's three hundred years old or four hundred, still standing after however many sandstorms have passed it by.

From there it's on to Ain Hodra, a natural Well tucked into the White Desert's chalk formations, then the Agabat dunes for a stretch of sandboarding before the morning heat sets in. Crystal Mountain comes next, a hill studded with calcite that changes color depending on the angle of the sun, and El Hiez water well closes out the sightseeing. Lunch is back at the Bedouin house at 2pm, cooked the same way as the day before, and by 3:30 you're on the road to Cairo, roughly four hours out.
